Update on Starwood’s Millbrae Plans
Yesterday I had a post about Starwood Hotels and Resort’s changing plans of their Millbrae property where currently two hotels exist, a Clarion Hotel & a Westin Hotel. Initially the plans were to demolish the Clarion, re-brand the Westin as an element, and build two new hotels – an aloft and Four Points, but there were reports that Starwood was going to either significantly scale back the plans, or ask for another year to pull off their plans.
Last night the Millbrae City Planning Commission met and heard Starwood’s request for a one year extension to their building plans, which was approved by the Millbrae Board. The reason for Starwood’s request for the extension is due to the unfavorable market conditions of the California hotel market – currently it would not make sense to do these construction projects, but within a year it may be more viable.
As it stands now, Starwood has a one year extension to proceed with their project, at the end of the one year Starwood is to report back to the City Planning Commission with an update on their plans. At that time, one of three things can occur – another extension may be granted, the project may be totally canceled, or the project will finally break ground.
