The Passionate Worker

I came across this blog post today from Seth Godin – an author whose opinion I don’t always agree with (I came very close to unsubscribing a number of times to his blog), but this post caught my eye – because it describes me and my passion for hotels, hotel development and working for Starwood Hotels or Starwood Capital to a T.

A new class of jobs (and workers) is creating a different sort of worker, though. This is the person who works out of passion and curiosity, not fear.

The passionate worker doesn’t show up because she’s afraid of getting in trouble, she shows up because it’s a hobby that pays. The passionate worker is busy blogging on vacation… because posting that thought and seeing the feedback it generates is actually more fun than sitting on the beach for another hour. The passionate worker tweaks a site design after dinner because, hey, it’s a lot more fun than watching TV.

That’s me – the person who will blog on vacation (for example – I’m staying at the Borgata tonight, and I had to fight myself to not pack my laptop to finish a few blog posts which I have been working on), the person who works out of passion and curiosity -

I couldn’t have said it better.. I’m glad I’m not the only one out there!

There are thousands – probably millions – of people who work jobs they don’t like – be it temporary assignments , or a job they’ve held for 20 years and they don’t leave because they don’t have the ambition or the encouragement to move on. One thing that I learned at a young age – is to search out a job that you enjoy, a job which is almost like a hobby  – when you get paid for work that you love to do – there’s no greater feeling in the world. A lot of times people can’t decide what exactly that is, but I consider myself lucky that I found what that it is (although – I don’t have the job yet!), and I encourage everyone to search deep inside themselves to find exactly what it is that will make them excited to go to sleep – because its one step closer to waking up in the morning and going to work.

  1. I found your blog last week and have been reading it ever since. It’s a fine read. To add to this post, I think David McCullough said it best, “Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love.”

  2. Dan – thanks for the comments about my blog. I completely agree with that quote!
